CAT6 vs. CAT6A for a Commercial Building

The cable should match the building, not just today's computers

Structured cabling can remain in a building through multiple generations of switches, access points, phones and computers. Choosing between CAT6 and CAT6A should therefore consider the expected life of the installation, cable pathways, network speeds, Power over Ethernet devices and the cost of replacing cable later.

Both categories can be appropriate. The best choice is the one that meets the actual application while leaving sensible room for growth.

CAT6

CAT6 is widely used for commercial Ethernet and is a strong fit for many office data drops, phones, printers, cameras and access points. It supports Gigabit Ethernet at the full standards-based channel distance and can support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over shorter distances when installation conditions allow.

For businesses whose endpoints primarily require 1 GbE or multi-gigabit connectivity and whose pathways make future changes practical, CAT6 can provide an effective balance of performance and cost.

CAT6A

CAT6A is designed to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over the full 100-meter channel and provides improved performance against alien crosstalk. It is typically larger and can require more pathway space and attention to bend radius, termination and cable management.

CAT6A deserves serious consideration for new construction, backbone-like horizontal runs, high-performance wireless access points, environments with long cable runs, and facilities where replacing cable later would be disruptive or expensive.

Power over Ethernet changes the conversation

Modern networks increasingly power wireless access points, VoIP phones, cameras and other devices over Ethernet. Cable bundling, conductor size, pathway design and heat should be considered when many powered devices are planned. A professional design looks at the complete channel rather than choosing cable by category label alone.

Plan the entire structured cabling system

Cable is only part of the system. Patch panels, jacks, racks, pathways, labeling, testing, grounding where applicable and network-room organization all affect serviceability. A clean installation makes future troubleshooting and expansion much easier.
