Hotel Wi-Fi is a capacity problem and a coverage problem
Guests now arrive with multiple phones, tablets, laptops, streaming devices and wearables. A signal bar in every room is not enough; the network must handle simultaneous demand across occupied rooms and common areas.
Guest rooms change radio behavior
Bathrooms, mirrors, masonry, fire assemblies, metal doors, mechanical spaces and floor construction can all affect signal propagation. Access points placed only in hallways may not provide the same performance inside every room. Property layout should drive the design.
Plan wired infrastructure first
Access points need dependable backhaul, power and switching. Structured cabling, PoE budgets, network closets and fiber between buildings or floors should be designed to support the wireless system. A beautiful access point cannot compensate for an undersized or unreliable wired network.
Separate guest and operational traffic
Guest internet should be logically separated from hotel administration, staff systems and other operational technology. Restaurants, POS systems, cameras, building systems and vendor equipment may create additional network segments depending on the property.
Consider internet redundancy
A hotel may want a secondary internet path for critical operations. Depending on the site, that could involve another terrestrial provider or Starlink. Failover should be designed and tested rather than assumed.
Design for the actual property
