Define the operation before selecting devices

Security planning begins with how the building will be used. Identify public areas, staff-only spaces, deliveries, after-hours activity, and the events the camera system should help document.

Include the owner, operator, property manager, and relevant design professionals early. Their requirements may differ, and those differences are easier to resolve before construction reaches the finishing stage.

Review doors as complete assemblies

For each controlled opening, identify the access objective and involve the responsible door-hardware and design professionals. Door construction, locking hardware, power, access controls, and applicable egress requirements need coordination.

Avoid treating the reader location as the whole design. Ask who supplies and installs each component and who verifies the finished door operation.

Plan camera objectives and infrastructure together

List the purpose of each proposed view: entrance identification, general activity, a transaction area, or a loading approach. Lighting, sightlines, mounting, and maintenance access all influence the result.

Coordinate pathways, network locations, and power with the IT and construction teams. Describe responsibilities explicitly where the security system uses infrastructure installed by another contractor.

Resolve management and recording requirements

Decide who will administer access permissions, review video, and receive system notifications. Discuss recording-retention objectives, export procedures, and accounts before equipment is finalized.

Ask about ongoing support, software subscriptions where applicable, and documentation. A building handover should leave the owner able to manage the system or reach the team responsible for it.

Test the finished workflows

Before handover, verify the agreed camera views, recording and playback, credential permissions, schedules, and door operation with the responsible professionals. Record outstanding items and update the as-built information.
